In 2023, solar power will account for 5.5% of total electricity generation in the United States, up 17.5% from the previous year.
In 2023, solar PV will account for 5.5% of total electricity generation in the United States, reaching 4,251 TWH. Utility-scale solar (1mwac and above) accounted for 3.8% of total generation, while the remaining 1.7% was generated by small-scale solar. Overall, solar's share of total power generation increased by 17.5% from 4.7% in 2022.
However, the growth rate of solar power generation declined from the previous year. Solar capacity will grow by 40.6 TWh in 2022, while it will only grow by 33.2 TWh in 2023, even less than the 33.9 TWh increase in 2021.
The increase in 2023 is mainly due to the 20.2 GW of solar capacity deployed in 2022, however, this is a decrease from the 23.6 GW deployed in 2021. The slowdown in 2022 was due to various factors in the supply chain, including COVID-19, fluctuations in component demand and polysilicon supply, and U.S. import tariffs.
As of now, 35 GW is expected to be deployed in 2023, increasing total capacity by nearly 25%, and solar's share in the power generation mix is also expected to grow by about 25%. That's still very pleasing.If electricity demand remains the same in 2024, with a growth rate of 25%, then solar power could account for 6.9% of total electricity generation this year.
At this rate of growth, solar could reach 9.0% of all electricity generation by 2025. This means that by 2026, solar power will generate well over 10% of total electricity.
