solutions | Perimeter Detection
The perimeter consisted of an exposed, outdoor
area protected only by standard chain link fencing. Instead of
replacing the existing fence with a wall-and-moat perimeter that
could take perhaps months to construct and require significant costs,
the pharmaceuticals company sought a more cost-effective and quickly
deployable solution.
To complete this mission-critical project,
ComCam teamed with Fiber SenSys, the world leader in fiber-optic
security systems; Wave Wireless, a leading provider of broadband
wireless routers and other products; and STV Group, an engineering,
architectural, planning, environmental and construction management
firm).
ComCam technologies essentially transformed a
security fence into a wireless, IP-addressable reporting device with
video surveillance and analysis capabilities. They were used to
incorporate specially calibrated motion-detection and other
algorithms in a fiber-optic perimeter sensing system to measure
unacceptable fluctuations in fence movement and provide alarm
notification and video capture of potential security breaches. Housed
in a custom designed all-weather casing, the units’ low-power
consumption requirements permitted use of a solar collector as the
energy source.)
ComCam’s advanced digital signal
processing permitted the fencing to become a “smart”
system – enabling it to analyze disturbances and differentiate
between a real intruder and common sources of nuisance alarms such as
wind storms, small animals or vibrations due to heavy vehicles
passing nearby. The unit was programmed to accept input from an
optional anemometer, to sense actual wind speed or a
signal-processing algorithm. The system was also IP zone
addressable, provided alarm/video/time reporting and dispatch, was
programmable for pre/post video control and a site-specific custom
interface was available.
